CHALICE BOOK

CHALICE BOOK

Introduction

In monastic life, when a priest passes away, his chalices aren’t given to his biological family but are kept with the monastery for reuse or for posterity. Because of this, monasteries collect large chalice collections spanning over the course of their existence. The style of these chalices can vary widely. Over the centuries, different art movements have influenced the craftsmanship of each chalice.

While working as the Director of Communications of St. Benedict’s Abbey, Phil toured the vestibule of the Abbey, where over a hundred chalices and other sacred objects are kept. Over the next year and a half, Phil documented each chalice and researched the composition and meaning of each chalice, as well as the owner and his life. This work eventually formed a yet-to-be-published book on Chalice design and history. Additionally, a promotional calendar was made.
